Building Your Community Online

In today's economy you can't afford to sell the Internet short as one of the most cost effective ways to promote your business. However making a few bad moves can also do much more harm then good, and that you can't just sit at home and wait for the money to come in. You have to get out there and meet with people in real life.

Here are some of the fundamental rules of business networking that are applicable to both real life events and to networking on the Internet.

1) Get to Know People; People Like to Deal with People that They Know.

2) Let People Get to Know You and What You Can Do for Them.

3) Don't SPAM Your Business Cards or Post Off Topic Mesages On the Internet to Forums, Blogs or Message Boards.

People that have been members of Chambers of Commerces or other business organizations know it's not about "pitching", "elevator speeches" or business cards. It's about meeting people and building business relationships that are based on trust and that doesn't happen in a week or two.

We attend numerous business networking events and often we see people make the mistake of walking about Chamber of Commerce events spamming business cards and other promotional material. When they should be getting to know the people there instead, we only pass our business card if someone asks us for it. Leave the promotional items home they only get in the way and then we have something that they haven't seen for the when they come in for an appointment.

Social Networking is not about driving traffic to your website, or the number of people that follow you on Twitter. It's about meeting people and getting people to call you when they need you to do something for them. People like to know the people that they do business with and will tell their friends to do business with you too.
